Family Justice Services

What is Family Justice Services?

Family Justice Services (FJS) is a division of the Supreme Court of Newfoundland and Labrador. It offers services that assist families in resolving parenting and/or child support issues.

FJS focuses on the needs of children and promotes dispute resolution outside of the courtroom. Dispute resolution/mediation occurs when parties talk to a neutral person to explore ways to resolve their family law problems.

FJS offers free services to residents of Newfoundland and Labrador that are involved in family law matters. Some of their services include:

  • Parent education sessions on family law and parenting after separation;
  • Dispute resolution in cases of parenting and child support issues;

Please note that FJS does not provide legal advice.

How to Access Family Justice Services

You can access FJS by either completing sending a “Request for Service” directly to FJS or by filing an “Originating Application” form with the Supreme Court.

Request for Service: when both people want to resolve their problems outside of Court, they can access dispute resolution service through FJS. Both parties must complete and sign a Request and forward to the nearest FJS office. This form is available at all Court locations, all FJS locations, and below:

Online Parent Information Session – Living Apart, Parenting Together

This online course offered by FJS helps parents make careful and informed decisions about their separation and any conflicts that may arise from it.  It helps parents make decisions which will take into account the best interests of their children.

Upon completion, parents are required to complete a short evaluation and obtain a certificate.  Please keep a copy of your certificate as it may be required as proof of completion.

The online session can be accessed at: https://www.supreme.courtcourses.ca/.
