Courtroom Attire – Counsel

Counsel are expected to comply with the Notice to the Profession dealing with Court Attire for Counsel.

Courtroom Attire – Self-Represented Persons / Witnesses

There is no dress code for persons representing themselves or appearing as witnesses, but you should keep the seriousness of the occasion in mind and dress accordingly. A tidy appearance is more likely to create a good and positive impression. Avoid extravagant, distracting or informal clothing. Hats should not be worn in the courtroom.

Arriving at the Court

Arrive early to ensure you have enough time to pass through the security screening and find where you need to go. You should check to ensure you know what courtroom your matter will be held in. Treat Judges, Court Staff, and Opposing Counsel Respectfully

You should treat the judges, court staff members and opposing counsel respectfully. This means you should:

  • Stand when the Judge enters the courtroom.
  • When entering or leaving the courtroom while the court is in session, bow or nod your head as you leave.
  • When your turn comes to speak to the Judge, stand up (if you are able) and speak clearly and loudly.
  • Refer to the judge as “Justice”.
  • Remain polite and courteous to all persons at all times.
  • Avoid the use of abusive language, which is unlikely to persuade the Judge of the value of your case.

Other Dos and Don’ts

You should:

  • Avoid talking while the court is in session.
  • Turn off your cellphone or put it on silent when in the courtroom.

You should NOT:

  • Wear scented products.
  • Chew gum.
  • Bring food or drink into the courtroom.
