PROVINCIAL
COURT OF NEWFOUNDLAND AND LABRADOR
The Provincial Court is the Court of first
instance for all criminal and regulatory offences. Trials of the vast
majority of such offences are concluded there. The Court serves as the
Youth Court, Traffic Court, Small Claims Court for most civil claims up
to $5,000.00, and—outside of those areas covered by the Unified Family
Court Division of the Supreme Court—deals with most family law matters
other than divorce or division of property under the Family Law Act. The
Court also conducts inquiries into accidental or mysterious deaths or
fires.
One of our main aims is to provide the
public with information about who we are, what we do, where we are and
when, how to contact us, and hopefully answer a number of common
questions some users and observers of the courts have. Throughout the
site the left hand menu is persistent. It enables you, with a click, to
return here, explore in more detail our business lines, find out who and
where we are, look at our news—old and new—and explore links to other
outside services that might be of interest to you.
Another of our aims is to provide staff
and law enforcement personnel with a convenient way to get up-to-date
information critical to their work. The menu items for Duty Judge and
Staff Only require intended users to have an authorized password.
Passwords will only be issued to staff and law enforcement personnel and
can be obtained by such persons by contacting the Manager of Criminal
History at 709-729-1787.
Throughout the text portions of the site
you will notice highlighted words or terms, which when clicked will
bring you to more detailed related information.
Links from this site
to other sites are presented as a convenience to users. The
Courts of Newfoundland and Labrador do not accept any
responsibility for the content, accuracy, reliability, or
currency found on external sites.
H1N1 Pandemic Plan Update
Message from Chief Judge Mark Pike
The Provincial Court of Newfoundland and Labrador has been finalizing its Pandemic
Plan. The plan includes preparation for modified or reduced services to the public
depending on the effects which the disease might have on our staff, the public and
other groups such as lawyers, police and sheriff’s officers. As part of the plan,
the Court has also initiated an education effort to inform all court staff of the
threat posed by the H1N1 pandemic through accurate information packages and continued
discussions and reviews. This website, along with the public media, will be used to
convey Plan and Alert Updates and will be updated as necessary. Please check here
regularly for further announcements and information.
